WE TAKING MATTRESSES AT THE TRANSFER STATION

Things are changing in Massachusetts. As of November 1, 2022, Mattresses are added to the list of materials banned from disposal or transport for disposal in Massachusetts. Mattresses will no longer be allowed in the trash. New State rules require mattresses be kept out of the trash so they can be recycled. In order to comply, The Town of Otis has changed the way we collect mattresses. The MassDEP has funded a grant for the town of Otis to purchase a container for recycling.

WHY MATTRESSES?

Mattresses are made up almost entirely of recyclable materials. Once disassembled, more than 75 percent of mattress components can be recycled.

By reducing disposal, the waste bans also help us capture valuable resources, save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lessen our reliance on landfills and incinerators.

MA residents throw out 300,000 mattresses each year. That’s a lot of potential material that can be used to make new products. In fact, over 75% of mattress and box spring components can be easily disassembled and recycled.

Mattresses also take up a lot of space! Separating them for recycling is better for the planet and reduces the need for additional landfills and municipal waste combustion facilities.
